PRINCIPLES OF USE FOR PUBLIC SPACES AND EVENTS

POLICIES

Statement of Purpose for Public Spaces

Calit2 invests intellectually and financially in creating new multidisciplinary research programs that directly benefit society. We partner with virtually every department on campus, in the Arts and Humanities as well as the Sciences, but extend our reach to other institutions and commercial partners around the globe.

Calit2's role is as an "enabler"--we bring together extraordinary talent that might otherwise not meet, and provide facilities with unique technical capabilities within an intellectual atmosphere that fosters creation of revolutionary ideas and products. Our goal is to encourage researchers to engage with colleagues inside the building, accross campus, and around the world.

The occupants and users of Atkinson Hall play a significant role in shaping the Institute's contributions, objectives and culture. As such, management of common space in the building is critical to the future of Calit2. To further the mission of the institute, we have established certain principles to govern use of common facilities in Atkinson Hall.

Principles

  1) Subject to the other principles listed here, use of the building will be open to all members of the UCI and UCSD campus communities, regardless of discipline, department, or unit. Users of Atkinson Hall facilities should be involved in activities that are relevant to and advance the mission of the institute or further the research, education, and public service missions of the University of California.
  2) Due to the high demand for use of our facilities, we reserve the right to prioritize according to the following criteria:
    a. uses by and for UC personnel affiliated with Calit2, as defined by one of the following criteria: projects funded directly or indirectly by Calit2, or for projects funded by grants administered by Calit2 or housed in Atkinson Hall;
    b. events closely aligned with the Statement of Purpose (see above);
    c. events that utilize the unique technical capabilities of our facilities.
  3) The authority to approve use of facilities in Atkinson Hall rests with the Division Director and his or her delegate, including any exceptions to the general usage principles listed here.
  4) Events held in Atkinson Hall should not be advertised as being sponsored by Calit2 or UCSD without explicit written permission. Use of the Calit2 logo or name on signs or material must be approved by Calit2 staff.
  5) Events held in Atkinson Hall should have their location listed as "Atkinson Hall."
  6) Use of Atkinson Hall facilities will be subject to recharge based on rates approved by appropriate UCSD recharge and review committees. (Rate and cost-sharing information can be found at http://atkinsonhall.calit2.net/rates/).
  7) Student organizations are not permitted to use the events facilities in Atkinson Hall. Academic Departments and Organized Research Units wishing to sponsor student groups must submit a letter of support for student organizations, provide an index number for fees, and must sign the Atkinson Hall Usage Agreement on the organization's behalf.
  8) Classes scheduled through the UCSD Registrar are not permitted to use Atkinson Hall.
